Shifting the paradigm and incorporating ways to approach chronic disease and health are the reasons I do what I do. Approximately 2.3 trillion dollars are spent each year on chronic disease. What a staggering number, its too big to fathom really. We need to make conscious efforts in what we put in our bodies, so that we can truly heal.
The Western world, and probably the Eastern too, live in an environment that initiates, promotes and accelerates chronic inflammation. Such factors like unhealthy dietary habits, sedentary lifestyle, high stress, lack of quality sleep and prescription medications may all be factors in worsening chronic inflammation. These players in your health can cause things such as microbiome dysbiosis (good and bad critters that should and shouldn’t be in your gastrointestinal tract), oxidative stress (things they degrade your DNA faster and increase risk for cancer), and cell injury. Here’s the kicker, what do you think of when you hear of chronic inflammation? Drawing a blank? How about diagnoses such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer, depression and anxiety. That sounds more familiar right?
Looking at health from a reductionist model isn’t the worst, but it isn’t the best either. Take this pill for this diagnosis, if that pill doesn’t work take this other pill, and so on. Pretty soon you end up with a list of medications and you don’t know what’s doing what, and the doctor starts treating your side effects or worsening chronic symptoms with increasing dosages. In my opinion, this shouldn’t be the model for “health.” Especially when you look at health from the primary care standpoint. We should be emphasizing more on nutrition, gut health, metabolic health and lifestyle interventions. It’s not the doctor’s fault either; it’s the whole system. This is why I chose to pursue Naturopathic medicine, and this is why everyone should be treated individually and not a robot. Everyone has different dietary palates or choices, everyone has different genetics, and everyone lives different lives.
